The session started slowly as teams just trickled out on to the track, completed installation laps and returned to the pits to check all was okay with the new cars.
The Ocelot's or Hugh Dwyer and Scott Parsons were first to set lap times, eager to gain data in their first season, but ultimately ended up the slowest two of the twenty four runners. Action picked up around the mid-point as Enrique Ruiz asserted his Champions authority by going fastest, but was soon displaced by his biggest rival from a different team last year in Karl Beckenbauer. The two traded fastest times with Wagner a distant third, showing early on it could be another scrap between them for the title. But while they scrapped, Harrison got his head down and set a time just four thousandths fastest than Beckenbauer to go top. Just as it was looking as though Harrison would shockingly top the session, with just three minutes to go Wagner displaced the American, becoming the only driver to break into the 1:24's, with the field eventually separated by just over 2 seconds. Hutchinson confirmed Meteor's strong pace with sixth quickest, while Simon could only manage eighth in the second Liverpool.
