Team 23 have edged out their rivals in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix. Elroy Wagner set the pace for pole, and just a tenth ahead of his teammate Jean Mattson. The Team 23 drivers have been on from of late, closing in on Nathaniel Powers and Franklin quite noticeably in both championships. Powers and Hoskins' best laps put them in fourth and fifth; just one thousandth of a second between them. However it was the on form Carson Davenport who topped the pair; setting the third fastest lap time. Hugh Dwyer once again backed up Lucas Wilson Grand Prix's performance by posting the sixth fastest lap time. Adrien Simon was seventh fastest, ahead of his teams former test driver Ivan Lesic who has made his debut for Meteor Motorsport. Marcus Thunder set the ninth fastest time; not for Downton Pagani, but for for Mathershaw while filling in for Karl Beckenbauer. Romano Agostino set the tenth fastest time; both Meteors in the top ten. Enrique Ruiz impressed again after he set the eleventh fastest time meanwhile his teammate Diego Campos was last. Manni Costello who has replaced Enzo Domenicalli for the remainder of the season for Scuderia Rossi set the 14th fastest time; under a tenth behind his teammate. It was a disaster qualifying for Downton Pagani; especially for returnee Kip Maxwell who suffered from an engine blow out on in fast lap. The Japanese Grand Prix is looking good for Team 23 and Jean Mattson. This gives the Frenchman yet another opportunity to cut down on Nathaniel Powers championship lead with just three races to go. The qualifying session was dry throughout; however the forecasts are predicting a slight chance of rain during some stage of the race.
