The 2018 Formula Virtual season has yet been thrown another change in an already 'shaked up' season, adding to the new car chassis and raft of team and driver changes. For the first time in the sports history there will be multiple different types of engines with different cylinders. The V12 will continue to be available as it has been since 2014, the V8 returns for the first time since 2013, and the V10 makes it debut. All engine types are expected to have performance advantages at different tracks. According to Herbert Florentine, Formula Virtual technical guru, the V8 is expected to have an advantage around the slower corners, the V12 best in straight line speed, and the V10 having the best of both worlds but not the best in either.
This comes as a shock to most teams, drivers, and fans, as most teams would have nearly completed designs for the 2018 season. There has already been some rumored criticism in the paddock stating that the news has come "far too late" in the season. Hebert Florentine hit back stating: "not really a big issue here. They don't need to change engines if they don't want to, just stick with the V12". Formula Virtual CEO, Nic Morley, praised the new engine regulations as a "giant leap" for the series and something that will create more intrigue for teams and the fans. "I am incredibly excited to open the engine regulations for teams. What we will see is more intrigue for the fans and also more strategy for the teams, this really is a giant leap for Formula Virtual. It will be made sure no engine has a huge advantage, every engine will have their pros and cons, and the idea is to have engines perform differently whether it is a slower or a faster corner. For the past three years we have ran V12 engines and to be honest I don't feel they really captured of what a roaring V12 should sound like. From next year the V12 engines will sound much better, while there also being hopefully a mix of screaming V10's and soothing V8's. It's completely up to the engine manufactures and teams what they choose and I'm sure we all will look forward to the choices made. I have a great feeling about Formula Virtual in 2018, it is looking to be the best in history", claimed Nic Morley. Despite this news coming late in the season, engine suppliers and teams are expected to make their choices no more than one week past the season ending Brazilian V-Prix.
