Adrien Simon has set the fastest time in the opening practice session of 2017 ahead of the Australian V-Prix at Phillip Island. With Phillip Island a new venue to all drivers after the late decision to switch from Melbourne due to problems with the circuit, the majority of the field were straight out onto the circuit to gain valuable knowledge in their only practice session.
Felix Beyer led the early running before Nathaniel Powers took over at the top of the times for the majority of the session, but it was reigning champion Simon - with a lap less than five minutes before the chequered flag fell - that ended the day on top, just 0.018 quicker than Powers. Enrique Ruiz was third ahead two of the three rookies for this season - Allar Kangur and Klaas van Snelheid - while the third - Finn Schnyder of Westwood - was twelfth fastest. Aleksy Nowosinki impressed for North Star with sixth fastest, while Arden Hutchinson of FIRST also snuck into the top ten in ninth. Jochem van Snelheid struggled in his first proper outing for Franklin in thirteenth while Will Hoskins was also adapting to his new AMR - ending the session 13 places and 1.2 seconds behind team mate Beyer. Meteor, Ingram and FUN - as expected after pre-season testing - have slumped towards the rear of the field with Ocelot, but it was even worse news for FUN's new recruit Olen Inman. The Monegasque - having finished runner-up in the championship last season for DS Mathershaw - failed to even leave the garage after problems with his new Volvo engine. See full classification below:
