Monza was bathed in bright sunlight throughout the session and it was Simon who the sun was shining on today, as his second lap of a 1:21.400 was enough for pole. Ruiz ended up 0.154 behind in second. Puccio Giodano joins Hoskins on the second row for his home race and will be desperate to move up just one place at least to take a home podium.
Tumo Kinnumen is fifth for the second race in a row while Enzo Domenicalli ensured Rossi would have two cars starting in the top six for their home race, a big boost in their quest to overhaul Downton for third in the championship. Lewis Ellington lines up seventh ahead of Elroy Wagner, Nikolai Milkovich and Jean Mattson rounding out the top ten. A scruffy session see's Karl Beckenbauer down in eleventh place with Hugh Dwyer alongside him and Diego Campos starting 13th. Meanwhile it was a shocking session for Downton. 14th for Thunder and 15th for Powers is their worst performance of the season so far, and both drivers will be looking to better that in the race. Keith Boston lines up 16th for his second race back. Lucas lock out the ninth row with Davenport 17th ahead of Gardner, and Beyer heading row 10 ahead of the returning Romano Agostino. Towards the back we have the usual suspects as Nakumaya, Osterhagen and Kubat are 21st, 22nd and 24th respectively however they are joined by the surprise Regi Abott, who endured a tough session and will start 23rd. This is the third race in a row that Liverpool have out-qualified Franklin but Robert Mathershaw will be hoping that Simon can succeed where Beckenbauer has failed in the last two race, keeping the lead off the line. We're also set for a tantalising battle between Ruiz and Hoskins, and it'll be interesting to see whether the two Downton's can come through the field to minimise the likely damage in the championship to Rossi.
