Having been deposed from the top spot last time out at Indianapolis, Adrien Simon returned to the head of the time sheets in Mexico, lapping the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez four tenths of a second faster than the Downton pair in second and third. The outgoing world champion looked to continue DS Mathershaw's strong run of form in recent races, as the team look to build momentum ahead of 2018.
Powers was the only other driver to break the 72-second barrier as he attempts to become the first ever double world champion. The Britain can do it this weekend but will need to win with Klaas van Snelheid finishing ninth or lower. The Ducthman was less than a tenth behind his team mate, slotting into third place. Oleksandr Zozulya impressed again in practice with fourth fastest yet only three tenths separated him from eleventh placed Finn Schnyder in an incredibly tight upper midfield. Tumo Kinnumen had the legs on Schnyder while Enrique Ruiz also lapped quicker than Puccio Giodano, and Allar Kangur looked to build on his win last time out with a solid seventh fastest. Both Holmqvist's scraped into the top ten while Johan Halvosen impressed in fourteenth fastest, but North Star were disappointed with thirteenth and fifteenth. The British outfit are looking to overhaul FIRST in the Constructors Championship for fifth place but their drivers Karl Beckenbauer and Judson Sikes were incredibly unhappy with the performance of the car.
