Westwood Racing driver Douglas Bacon has stunned the entire paddock claiming pole position in a rain effected qualifying session. The teams were faced with a wet Hockenheim; however the rain eased off in the final minutes; producing an exiting finish to the session. Jean Mattson led most of the session, consistently posting fast times in the wet. However as the track started to dry up Karl Beckenbauer pipped the Frenchman to the top spot; looking as if the Mathershaw driver had done enough for pole position. However in the final seconds of the session Douglas Bacon pipped them all posting a time over two tenths of a second clear of Beckenbauer. Jawa Ahmad impressed in the changing conditions setting the fourth fastest lap time, ahead of Adrien Simon who was fifth fastest. James Harding backed up Molto Veloce form, qualifying sixth fastest. Championship leader Nathaniel Powers could only manage seventh fastest, ahead of his teammate Will Hoskins in eighth; proving a difficult day for the championship leading team. While teammate had taken pole, Keith Boston set the ninth fastest lap time; finishing off a brilliant day for Westwood Racing. Elroy Wagner could only manage tenth fastest for his home race; though is believed to heavier fueled for a one stop strategy. Enzo Domenicalli his trouble during his first time lapped his Rossi-Ferrari came to halt; leaving the Italian without a set time and last on the grid. The race looks set to be run in improved conditions for the start, however a 90% chance of rain during some point during the race. All eyes will be on Douglas Bacon to see if he can hold off Karl Beckenbauer and Jean Mattson behind. The American will be hoping for more rain in a bid to hold onto his lead. Karl Beckenbauer will be looking to snatch the lead early and win his first and home race. Last race winner Jean Mattson will be eager to win and make the most of his championship rivals poor grid positions (Simon 5th, Powers 7th, Hoskins 8th, Wagner 10th). The strong chance of changing conditions and a mixed up starting grid hints for a thrilling German Grand Prix.
