Downton driver Nathaniel Powers has been taken to hospital following his horrific race-ending crash in the Austrian V-Prix, in which he barrel-rolled thirteen times. The British driver - who was leading the championship before the race and had started on pole position - crashed out on lap twenty after contact with Ocelot driver Karl Beckenbauer broke his front wing off. It was the second contact Powers had been involved in during the race, with Meteor driver Stuart Harrison having cut across him just a handful of laps beforehand, also breaking his front wing on that occasion.
The incident that ended his race occurred at turn five - the corner after his contact with Beckenbauer - when he clipped a bump on the inside of the corner that lifted the car which slid wide on two wheels. As his Downton reached the gravel trap it dug in and pitched Powers in a series of thirteen barrel rolls, before eventually coming to rest on the tyre barrier. Powers was seen moving in the car immediately after the incident but was assisted out of the car before being taken to the medical centre, where he was then transferred on to the hospital. Downton have released the following statement. 'We can confirm Nathaniel has been taken to the local hospital for precautionary checks. At no point did he lose consciousness and he is laughing and joking like his usual self, however he was complaining of some pain in his leg and wrists. As such, this trip to hospital is standard procedure and we will release more information in due course."
