A piece of Formula Virtual history will soon be going under the hammer, as North Star Racing have donated the broken front wing from Karl Beckenbauer's race-winning NSR-V02 to a motorsport-themed charity auction taking place at the end of the year. "Canada 2017 was a hugely special race for us, for so many reasons," team principal Nick Forrest told journalists. "Although we probably got as many comments afterward about Karl knocking his front wing off after the cool-down lap as we did about actually winning the race!"
Beckenbauer took a surprise maiden victory for North Star in Montreal, ahead of eventual champion Nathaniel Powers and Enrique Ruiz. On returning to the pit lane following the race, however, the German ran into the back of Will Hoskins' AMR, breaking his front wing off in the process. While unnecessary damage had been caused to the car, Forrest was able to see the funny side. "I will admit, I did start laughing as well when that happened, after a race where almost everything had gone right, to have something go wrong just after we'd gotten the result." "We did thankfully get it back," Forrest continued, "and both Alan and I thought this would be a fantastic way to give something back to the fans of Formula Virtual. The wing's still in one piece...mostly, it's a genuine race-winning part - there's not many times you get to say that! - and all the proceeds are going to a great cause, of course." As with most recently used motorsport components, the winning bidder will not receive the item immediately, with delivery intended to be sometime in the winter break before the start of the 2019 Formula Virtual season.
