"We are very excited to announce that - from 2018 - the Holmqvist team will be powered by Koenigsegg engines," commented Cory Evans. "It is an absolute dream come true for Fredrick and I to have secured the backing of such a major Swedish super car manufacturer in Koenigsegg, and we look forward to working with them."
At the conclusion of 2016 rumours were abound that Holmqvist were about to strike a deal with Volvo, but these fell silent when it was confirmed FUN would use Volvo engines instead, yet Evans insisted this was never the case. "We never had discussions with Volvo. With no disrespect to Volvo, it was always Koenigsegg we wanted, a super car manufacturer. We approached them initially when we joined in 2016 and they were interested, but there were certain conditions. They wanted to see the team progress - consistent points and a podium this year have met their expectations - and they wanted a guarantee of a Swedish race driver in at least their second season as engine supplier. Obviously our line-up for 2017 will be Will and Tumo, but for 2018 we are confident we can provide them with this home grown talent." Evans added that the deal had come about so suddenly because the relationship with Renault had become frosty. "We have not felt that we have been getting the same engines as Westwood. We hold no grudge against Westwood at all and they have been more than helpful in trying to sort this out with Renault, but the fact we were towards the bottom of the speed traps and they are somewhere near the top speaks volumes. The data - which Westwood provided us with - also does not lie. Renault did not like this accusation of favouritism - which we could understand to a degree given our position compared to Westwoods - and since then the relationship has been strained." "In the one and a half years before all of this Renault were brilliant, and we would like to thank them for all of their hard work and co-operation. We are incredibly excited for the future with Koenigsegg however, and especially being a semi-works team. This does not mean they will take over the running of the team however and we will stay as Holmqvist. Olsbergs will also remain as a major sponsor, but they will no longer be a title sponsor."
