Puccio Giodano claimed his second career pole position in qualifying for the German V-Prix, snatching the top spot late on from Arden Hutchinson; as for the first time in 2017, neither Downton will feature on the front row. Giodano's lap of 1:19:351 was three tenths slower than Nathaniel Powers practice-topping time from yesterday, but was enough - by 0.068 - to depose Arden Hutchinson from the top spot and what would have been his and his FIRST teams maiden pole position.
This marks the second time the number 12 will start on pole position this season, having also headed the field in Malaysia with Jochem van Snelheid behind the wheel, while Hutchinson and FIRST still secure their maiden front row start. The Downton duo of Nathaniel Powers and Klaas van Snelheid will start on the second row, with both drivers lapping four tenths of a second slower than practice yesterday and clearly unhappy with their performances. Enrique Ruiz matched Klaas' time but set it later so will head the third row with Allar Kangur alongside, the Estonian putting in his career best qualifying performance. Will Hoskins was a fantastic seventh fastest for AMR ahead of the second FIRST of Oleksandr Zozulya, while Tumo Kinnumen and Kiara Thunder rounded out the top ten; the latter beating new team mate Lewis Ellington, who struggled to only fourteenth on the grid. Reigning world champion Adrien Simon was another of those disappointed, as he could only put his DS Mathershaw twelfth on the grid. The team confirmed last night that a crack had been discovered in Simon's chassis resulting in the poor performance in practice yesterday. While his chassis was changed overnight, it was evident Simon was having a hard time getting to grips with his new car, and lapped three tenths slower than team mate Kangur. Incredibly eighteen cars were covered by just one second in the session, with Johan Halvosen the last of these in eighteenth place, lapping his Meteor an impressive three tenths quicker than James Harding's Lopez. While the primary choices for tomorrows race are the soft and medium tyres, a few drivers have chosen the hardest compound - perhaps convinced by their performance last time out in Spain - interestingly including Ruiz, who will start fifth.
