Downton driver Nathaniel Powers has been taken to hospital following his horrific race-ending crash in the Austrian V-Prix, in which he barrel-rolled thirteen times.
Nathaniel Powers took his fifth pole position of the season in qualifying for the Austrian V-Prix just ahead of team mate Klaas van Snelheid, in a session that was interrupted three times by red flags.
Nathaniel Powers was fastest in practice ahead of this weekends Austrian V-Prix, but team mate Klaas van Snelheid was less than half a tenth behind in a session that was dominated by wet weather.
Hugh Dwyer will sensationally return to Formula Virtual at the next round in Austria after a season and a half away, joining Olsbergs Team Holmqvist in place of Kiara Thunder.
Following the departure of Ocelot driver Karl Beckenbaur for the 2018 season, team principle Rai Miyamoto was questioned in a press conference about what Ocelot would do in the driver's market. ''As you know Karl will be leaving the team for Westwood next season which is a shame as it's been great having him around. Although we have talented driver's still yet to be signed by other team's so the market is completely open.'' When questioned on who the team had their eyes on Miyamoto remained tight lipped. ''I can't say right now, but everything will come into place when the time is right and of course we still have Jochem without a seat next season as well, Enzo in the ranks but lets just say we will make our move soon on what happens with the second seat...watch this space.''
Olsbergs Team Holmqvist have announced the first driver in their 2018 line-up as Tumo Kinnumen, with it confirmed earlier this evening the Finn was to leave Westwood after four years.
Westwood Racing have somewhat broken the form of last minute announcements, and already announced their lineup for the coming season, that will attempt to get the best out of their newly designed 2018 machines next year.
Team principal Harry Westwood, who had held a press conference rather out of the blue at the factory, had this to say: "Well, I'd like to thank you all for coming at such short notice. As you know, at Westwood Racing we always strive to achieve on and off the track. And we're really thrilled with the guys we're gonna be working with next year to get the most out of some very exciting looking cars. So it is with pleasure I announce that next year the number sixty-nine car will be piloted by none other than Finn Schnyder, while joining him in the number seventy will be the newest addition to our family, Karl Beckenbauer! 2018 will also see Nikolajis Christodoulou reprising his testing role, where he's been invaluable. However, it is with a heavy heart I, no, we, have to bid farewell to Tumo Kinnumen. He's been an utterly fantastic driver for us since 2014. After enduring difficult cars like the unreliable WR02 or the downright slow WR04, and bringing us our first taste of success in the form of multiple V-Prix wins in the beautifully striking WR03, we've mutually agreed that another team would be best for the flying Finn. Thankyou once again for turning up today guys, and we will have to wrap it up there. Help yourselves to refreshments." Well that comes as quite a shock to the paddock! Sadly Harry refused to tell us where Kinnumen would be racing next year, if at all. To this, all he had to say was "Don't worry, you won't have to wait long to find out." before leaving with a wry smile. Well that's been all from Southampton today, we'll see you all on the grid in Austria! The German V-Prix at the Hockenheimring - scheduled to take place today - has been postponed until Monday 5th June due to break-up of the track around the first and last corners, and along the start/finish straight.
Downton FV team principal Bradley Downton has admitted a dramatic setup change was the cause of his teams lack of performance in qualifying for the German V-Prix, as for the first time in 2017 neither Downton will start the race on the front row.
Puccio Giodano claimed his second career pole position in qualifying for the German V-Prix, snatching the top spot late on from Arden Hutchinson; as for the first time in 2017, neither Downton will feature on the front row.
Nathaniel Powers was fastest in practice ahead of this weekends German V-Prix, just over a quarter of a second quicker than team mate Klaas van Snelheid as the Downton cars continued to lead the times.
